On April 19th 2003, emergency services responded to a call about a fire at Sussex bird sanctuary. At 8:20pm a motorist who spotted the flames phoned the fire brigade who responded and extinguished the blaze. It was only when the fire was out that they realised what was burning... it was a womans body.
The body was burnt beyond recognition, but it was well preserved. Police immediately suspected the deceased to be a local woman who had gone missing 5 weeks earlier, but where had Jane Longhurst had been all that time?
